10 Ways to Know You're A Hot Yoga Teacher

The saying, "If you want to master something - teach it," has been true for me and hot yoga.

Back when I was 19, I started teaching yoga because it was fun; I wanted to share my love of yoga with my friends. Now, some 35+ later, I can tell you teaching yoga has taken me on the most surprising journey into own life - and farther than I ever imagined.

How do you know if you'd be a good hot yoga teacher?

Something that improves with age? You.

Is it really a "New Year" if you just get older?

What if you could truly "renew" instead of aging?

It's possible. Without creams, medications, treatments, plastic surgeries. With yoga. Did you ever wonder why yoga is the only exercise regime that actually makes your body feel better as you age? Can you say that about running? Or rock climbing? Biking? Baseball? I can't think of a single other regimen, exercise or sport that reverses the affects of aging; in fact, all of the aforementioned accelerate it.

I started practicing yoga at 15 years old, with a young, unknown TV yogi named Lilias Folan.

Yoga is a vibrant anti-aging secret for womenLittle did I know then that yoga would become my anti-aging secret. After 40 years I can say from experience: yoga is my ticket to aging gracefully.

Lilias, now her in her sixties, can confirm this. I met Lilias up close and personal about five years ago at an Omega Yoga Conference in NYC. She is WAY taller and more stately than she appeared on the small screen - even past age 60, she towered over me (Ok, I am only 5'1"...but Lilias also dwarfed most of the women AND men in the room) as I went up  to thank her for...well, everything...

Hot Yoga Secrets and AHA Moments

To paraphrase the old TV show, I've Got A Hot Yoga Secret:

The journey of Hot yoga is mapped out for you in each hot yoga class, but still, you have to take the twists and turns yourself. It's a winding road, but then, no one can go too far traveling in a straight line (thank you, Little Prince). Did you think yoga was going to be soft, and gentle, all New-Age cuddly and comfortable? Wake up sweetheart. You're doing hot yoga now.

The AHA moments of hot yoga begin at the end of your comfort zone.

When you've been doing yoga (40 years)  and teaching yoga (30 years) for some time, you find some pretty cool inroads. And crossroads.

Here are some of my personal yoga AHA moments:

Is Hot Yoga Your Emotional Rescue?

How about those emotional hot yoga reactions?

Nothing gets you more deeply and more quickly into healing mode than a good hot yoga class.

But you many not know that you're about to transform yourself emotionally as well as physically during each hot yoga class.

If you're practicing hot yoga (or one of Jaime’s nutritional programs) be prepared for some emotional shifts as your actual body chemistry improves.  Yes, it does improve, even if it doesn’t feel so good at first.

What causes the weird emotional reactions you might feel during hot yoga?

Should Governor Christie Do Hot Yoga?

I invited NJ Governor Chris Christie to a NJ hot yoga class at our studio.

I originally got the idea last October, after Governor Christie declined the 2012 GOP candidacy and the fat jokes got thick.

Comedian David Letterman said Christie couldn’t run for President because, “there isn’t a Quizznos within five miles of the White House."  Michael Kinsley of Bloomberg said, “Since the president inevitably sets an example, and obesity is a national epidemic, a skinny person should run the country.” News commentator Neil Cavuto called it ”racism with a scale."

Should weight impact your credibiity?

There is a definite weight prejudice in America and it equates overweight with under-qualified. Governor Christie is the ideal candidate to end that.
